Farmers should upgrade their firearms licences so they can attend to animal welfare, says the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association.
TFGA game management standing committee chairman Ken Perkins said that unless a firearms licence was endorsed for purposes of “animal welfare”, farmers could not put down an animal that had been injured on a public road.
Several other recent amendments to the State Firearms Act were relevant to farmers. he said.
The transport of prohibited firearms was more stringently policed than previously.
Trespassers with firearms were liable to twice the normal penalty and were liable to have firearms seized and permits or licences cancelled.
“Farmers are fficing problems with trespass with not only illegal shooting but also theft of fuel and stock, and the TFGA is satisfied to see the penalty for trespass increase to twice that normally allowed for these types of offences.” Mr Perkins said.
