Invasive bird problem in WA

6PR (Perth), Nightline, 01/12/2008 08:25pm

Compere Graham Mabury says a conference is due to be held in Perth on what to do about invasive birds. Andrew Woolnough, Manager of the Vertebrate Pests Research Section, Department of Agriculture and Food, says WA is doing very good work to keep many of the invasive birds out of the state. Woolnough mentions some species of birds that are causing trouble, including sparrows, blackbirds, starlings, rainbow lorikeets and the Indian house crow. Woolnough says the Sporting Shooters’ Association are doing a lot of work shooting invasive birds around the Swan Valley and engaging the community to create awareness of rainbow lorikeets, which are not native to WA.
