New gun laws set to target bikies

Police have begun gathering intelligence on outlaw bikie gangs aimed at putting into effect new gun laws.
Under the laws, described by Premier Mike Rann as the toughest in Australia, anyone issued with a prohibition order relating to firearms will face jail sentences of up to 15 years.
The laws came into effect at midnight last night and Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens said a key target would be outlaw motorcycle gangs.
Police will have the power to issue prohibition orders against people found near an illegal weapon or in the company of someone with a weapon. This means a bikie can no longer use the defence that a weapon found in a raid was not his.
“We will be targeting the very worst,” Mr Stevens said.
