Ireland ban on guns

Authorities are to ban handguns, Justice Minister Dermot Ahern says, after the number of licences issued for the weapons has mushroomed. The ban will be included in new legislation that is being urgently prepared by justice ministry officials. In the early 1970s, the holding of a handgun was banned until 2004.
