Wallaby problem in Katherine
Territory FM (Darwin), Territory Talk, 06/11/2008 09:14am
Katherine Mayor Anne Shepherd talks about the town’s wallaby problem. She says Pearl Aviation has a contract for the Air Med services, but they withdrew the plane after a couple of incidents in which they hit a wallaby causing damage to the aircraft. She says the Minister said there were helicopters in Katherine, but she can’t imagine them flying to Darwin at night.
Compere Peter Perrin wonders if he is suggesting the helicopter would be from the RAAF base and if the fixed-wing service would be withdrawn completely. Shepherd says the service is essential for Katherine. She says the Air Force base is building another fence to enclose the wallabies and there was a culling exercise a couple of weeks ago. She says the FA-18s are flying at night and the RAAF obviously does a risk assessment. She says the fence won’t be finished until Christmas or later.
