Firearms amnesty suggested for SA

Police Minister, Michael Wright, is suggesting a gun amnesty following the latest shooting in Gouger Street. Gun owners in South Australia will be asked to hand in illegal, unwanted or unregistered firearms. Mr Wright says he will raise the plan in a meeting this week with Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde. New figures show gun-related violence is still a serious problem in SA with almost 1500 shootings, attempted shootings and armed robberies in the five years to June 30 this year.
Caller Darryl says the only people who will hand in their weapons for a gun amnesty will be the ‘honest crooks’ not the hardcore criminals. He says this will be another total waste of tax payer money. He says this is only a band aid solution. He says Fed and state governments need to get together to stop illegal firearms imports. He says they are trying to do something good but it is a waste of time.
Caller Barry says it is wrong to say another gun amnesty will stop firearms related crime in SA. He says everyone knows the criminals will not hand in their weapons. He says this is a typical reaction by a government doing what they think the public will accept as a good idea. He says a gun amnesty will only affect law abiding people. He says we need a legal system shake up so those involved in gun crime are dealt with in a proper manner. Compere Leon Byner says there are some who say an amnesty is a good idea but that is not the nub of the problem.
