SSAA Tin Can Bay’s Junior Camp

by Lois Archer

Queensland’s SSAA Tin Can Bay Branch held a Junior Camp earlier this year, with 17 young people from 11 to 18 years of age learning the finer points of sports target shooting from many dedicated older shooters. The youngsters came from branches in Zone 3, which encompasses seven branches from the Sunshine Coast to Bunderberg and as far north-west as Eidsvold. Some of these juniors came with shooting experience, while some had very little experience but were still very keen to learn. Each one, however, went home knowing the basic rules of safely handling firearms.

Many of the juniors had previous experience in using one specific firearm and brought along their own or a family member’s rifle. After three days of coaching, each and every junior returned home having learned about the safer handling of most of the firearms that are used on the Tin Can Bay range.

Apart from centrefire rifles, the young charges were coached in the use of rimfire rifles, pistols, air rifles, air pistols and using over-and-under shotguns for clay target shooting. By the end of their stay, the youngsters had competed in .22 Field Rifle and .22 Pistol events and managed to bust quite a few clay targets using mostly 12-gauge shotguns.

SSAA Tin Can Bay is extremely proud of the attitude of these young people, the scores they attained by the end of the weekend and their dedication, as well as that of the coaches and range officers who gave their time to make the branch’s annual Junior Camp such a great success. These young people are the future of our sport and the branch looks forward to seeing them enjoy a lifetime of sports shooting, in whichever discipline they may choose.
