Queensland teenager Jayme Boycon, who began shooting four years ago, now heads out to the range every month with one goal in mind - reaching AA Grade status in Clay Target shooting. Jayme was introduced to the shooting sport by his father, Ian, when he attended an open shoot at the Toogoolawah Clay Target Club and he has kept his eyes to the skies ever since.

“I used to play football, but I prefer the personal challenge in target shooting, said Jayme. “I do this by myself and I work hard at it. “You can’t rely on other people to do well; it’s just you and your gun.”

Jayme, now 15, acquired his firearms licence at the age of 11 and enjoys the opportunity to shoot not only with his father, but also his brother. The trio are members of the SSAA Brisbane Valley Club, where Jayme has taken part in Pistol and Rifle shoots, and also the Toogoolawah Clay Target Club.

“My dad and fellow club members help with my coaching,” Jayme said. “My goal is to get better and always improve.

“Clay target shooting is good fun. You really need to pay attention and look for where the clay goes because it always changes.”

Monthly shoots at Toogoolawah are starting to pay off for the C Grade shooter, who has now twice won the Junior High Gun award. Jayme’s favourite firearm at the moment is his Miroku Mk70 12-gauge shotgun with a custom Trap stock. He reloads his own clay target ammunition in 24g No. 7.5 ball.

Jayme’s interest in shooting goes beyond the shooting range. He’s also a keen hunter, going out regularly with his brother and father. Together, they hunt feral animals such as pigs, foxes, cats and rabbits on properties around Boomi in New South Wales. They also hunt locally for rabbits. Jayme said they sometimes bring home the spoils of their hunts to cook, enjoying rabbits and pig legs in particular.

Ian Boycon said that shooting and hunting is a fantastic way of enjoying the outdoors and spending time together.

“We generally go for three- or four-day trips with our good friend Nelson, who imparts his years of experience on to us novice hunters,” he said.

“In our most recent trip, we despatched a couple of foxes, three pigs and a cat. The property owner likes to hear about us despatching of as many feral animals as we can.

“Getting to shoot competition clays with Jayme once a month has really brought us together and gives us a common interest to share.”

The enthusiasm of sport shooting is just starting to reach Kyle, too; he enjoys having a shot at clays, but is not yet into competing. Kyle also enjoys archery and has a compound bow in his kit.
