Wenger launches Ueli Steck Climber’s Knife
Wenger and professional mountaineer Ueli Steck have unveiled the Ueli Steck Climber’s Knife with tools designed for climbers, or any outdoor pursuit that requires in-action equipment adjustment.
One of three knives in the new Wenger Titanium Line, made from lightweight titanium and thick, high-strength steel, it was developed and tested by Ueli Steck, who holds world records for speed ascents off the famous North Faces of the Alps: Matterhorn, Eiger and Grandes Jorasses.
“I was really inspired by Wenger because I had to define the essential tools that I need,” said Steck. “You can open the knife with one hand -that’s really important - you can also use it with gloves. It’s really a tool to use for any kind of mountaineering. With the bits system and adapter you can take with you exactly what you need. If you go hiking, or climb the Eiger North face, or you go cross-country skiing you need the same knife. It’s minimised to the optimum yet very strong. I use this knife.”
Wenger CEO Peter Hug added: “This product was built for an elite athlete whose extreme challenges would not be attempted by the layperson. Yet the Ueli Steck Climber’s Knife is for anyone that challenges themselves in the great outdoors. The range truly has been created for extreme use and is extremely useful for your adventures.”
The locking blade can be opened with a single hand and boasts innovative functions including three hex keys (nut wrenches) that meet standard equipment sizes from 7mmm to 13mm (M4, M6 and M8). These crucial tools have been incorporated into a 2.6mm-thick locking partially serrated blade - which is 44% thicker than standard blades - to maximise its strength and multifunctional capabilities. The blade securely locks in position and even with gloves on, can be disengaged by depressing the Wenger cross or shifting the liner lock.
The Wenger Ueli Steck Climber’s Knife also includes a plateau on the reverse side of the blade to act as a very powerful flat head screwdriver. A 0.25" bit adapter is built into the handle casing to attach hex, Philips and flat head bits or any other bit that might fit one’s specific equipment. The tool also features a metal saw and file, can opener, locking screwdriver and lightweight pouch.
“During an ascent, if any of the hardware on my climbing axes, crampons or other equipment comes loose I need to have the right tools to make immediate repairs in remote locations,” said Steck. “To have all the things I need in one tool, it’s fantastic.”
Wenger CEO Peter Hug said: “We have proudly supported Ueli for some time, and the fact that we have only just released this knife shows the time and effort we have invested to make it perfect and perform flawlessly for the multiple jobs it needs to do. Its combination of multi-functionality, strength and quality make the Wenger Ueli Steck Climber’s Knife like no other on the market.”
