John McDougall appointed to Board of IWMC World Conservation Trust
The IWMC World Conservation Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of John McDougall as Vice-President for Oceania and member of the IWMC Board.
IWMC World Conservation Trust is a non-profit group that actively advocates for the sustainable use of wildlife resources across the globe. Created in 1994, it is a charitable organization incorporated in Canada and headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.
IWMC’s primary focus is to ensure that international instruments - particularly the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) - have a positive impact on wildlife and natural habitats by instituting management measures and procedures that promote the recovery and conservation of endangered species.
Mr McDougall is an energetic advocate in Australia for the sustainable use of marine species and the humanitarian use of wildlife. He has called on his government to set seal quotas that will assist the recovery of fisheries in southern Australia, recommended a harvest of abundant whales in order to supply meat as aid to Africa and opposes the use of benthic gill-nets in preference to long-lines in shark fisheries to reduce by-catch.
As a keen hunter and gatherer, Mr McDougall has been published in Australian and overseas hunting and fishing magazines for over 30 years. He is the principal of Sustainable Marine Management Services P/L and Eco-Concepts International P/L.
Eugene Lapointe, President of IWMC and a former Secretary General of CITES, said, “Wildlife management has become increasingly complex and John’s creative thinking and straight talking will be a tremendous asset as we move conservation issues forward. We welcome John as a valuable member of our international team.”
