Digest of Guns and Hunting
Lionel Swift is a name that will be familiar to many dedicated Australian Shooter readers. A SSAA member since 1972, Lionel has been contributing to our stable of magazines for five years now.
Not one to stand back and let others come up with all the ideas, Lionel has thought of an innovative way to reach his readership, recently putting some of his stories, adventures and advice on what he calls ‘discbooks’. DiscBooks offer a selection of books, previously obtainable only as hard copies, in pdf format and published on CDs for use on computers. The idea is quite a good one - the CD itself is cheap and doesn’t require a lot of space to store. You can save the whole discbook onto your computer if you wish and if you need to locate something quickly, you can use Adobe Reader’s keyword search function - much easier than scanning through an entire book to find what you’re after.
Lionel’s most recent discbook, Digest of Guns and Hunting, is a collection of 26 of his stories, covering the many and diverse aspects of firearms, shooting and hunting in Australia and abroad. Some of these stories have been published in our magazines before, several have been updated and others are completely original and unpublished works.
Lionel says that this collection of stories came about by coincidence. “I had decided to publish on disc a set of four electrical trade books written and published in print some years previously - the Electrical Industry Bibles No. 1 to 4 - and then it occurred to me to also put on disc another previously published book, The Wonthaggi Coalfields.”
“Although I’m a slow thinker, it eventually occurred to me that my articles on shooting and hunting matters in some of Australia’s hunting and shooting magazines had been well received by both publishers and readers. These too were thought worthy of disc-publication and so here they are!”
Digest of Guns and Hunting covers many aspects of Lionel’s shooting and hunting past, with a particular emphasis on shotgunning and fine European firearms. As a bonus, also included on the discbook is Lionel’s story ‘SIACE Guns are Italian Art’, which was first published in the July 2009 edition of Australian Shooter and now features additional supporting photos, and a descriptive catalogue from one of Italy’s most innovative firearms companies, SIACE. SIACE manufacture a variety of quality firearms, which Lionel was most enthusiastic about when he visited their specialist gunmaking facility in Brescia, Italy, with his wife Phyllis on their 2009 world trip.
Digest of Guns and Hunting is available from Lionel’s business DiscBooks for $14.95, including postage and handling, or $24.95 when purchased with the AYA Catalogue and Price List discbook.
