A couple of stories in this edition are worthy of special mention: John McDougall’s analysis of seal hunting in Canada and Warren McKay’s opinion piece on justifying hunting both get to the heart of what our chosen recreation is all about.

John clearly and concisely dispels the myths around the harvesting of an animal that is yes, very charming and friendly looking, but left unchecked threatens to overrun fish stocks and can be utilised for food and fur.

How we as a society can justify farming cattle, sheep and pigs for our plate, but get an anxiety attack when an animal or bird is hunted for the table, owes a lot to the lack of real-life education in our schools and cities.

Warren’s opinion piece also examines the Bambi syndrome. He argues that his drive to hunt is a psychological one, a deep-rooted instinct that in turn assists landowners in culling pests, allowing Australian native species a chance to survive and in addition provides meat for the table. In fact, Warren argues that we have a moral obligation to look after and manage the wildlife on this planet that we have changed so dramatically.
