104 Handgun shooting guide
Welcome to the 2008 edition of Australian & New Zealand Handgun. In this edition we offer a range of reviews and stories for handgunners of all levels and disciplines.
First up, senior correspondent Jennifer Martens speaks with Jason Williams, a young SA SSAA SASS shooter (what a mouthful!) who has just become Single Action Shooting’s newest world champion. A handgun, shotgun and rifle shooter, this already six-times Australian champion is a prime example of what a determined and talented young shooter can achieve with the support of their family and the shooting community.
From here, we delve into some technical information. Science buffs and those with an interest in ballistics will particularly enjoy the ammunition reloading data and Ian Thompson’s article on understanding recoil in pistols, while our revolver and self-loading pistol technical posters (on pages 94 to 97) help explain the componentry of handguns.
In our reviews section, read about Smith & Wesson’s huge X-Frame 460XVR revolver and a trio of pistols from Heckler & Koch. We test a variety of holsters, from the traditional to the very sleek and modern, for a range of target shooting competitions, and we serve up a few product reviews suited to those employed in the law enforcement services.
Continue on to our historical section and learn about the firearms of dictators Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein. Along with the percussion revolvers of the Old West and the pistols of imperial-era India, these are just a few of the firearms that have shaped and changed the course of world history.
Finally, turn to page 104 for our reprinted ‘Handgun shooting guide’. This comprehensive guide originally featured in our sold-out Inaugural Handgun magazine back in 2000. We received so many requests for copies of it that we have decided to feature it again to assist budding target shooters in their training.
So, enjoy all that this issue offers, and great handgunning.
