A new beginning for clay targets with Clay Targets Australia
by Media Officer Rachael Andrews
Clay Targets Australia is preparing to release an environmentally friendly and degradable clay target, following 10 years of hard work. Since the introduction of restrictions by some countries on the use of pitch targets because of soil quality concerns, clay target manufacturers around the world have been trying, to no avail, to develop an economical and eco-friendly target.
Enter the CTI target created by Clay Targets Australia. The CTI features modified sulphur as the target binder instead of coal-tar-, petroleum- or bitumen-based pitch, which is commonly used. The modified sulphur target is manufactured from materials sourced within Australia and will be considerably cheaper than any imported targets.
Manufacturers Mike Murphy and Graham Tunny believe their target puts clay target shooting in Australia one step ahead of the world in the environmental stakes. A major factor has held back progress in this area for clay target manufacturers around the world has been prohibitive costs. Not only have Mike and Graham had to source a suitable material composition for the target to meet restrictions, but they also have had to develop a target which could be produced through the existing machinery that is common to all target manufacturers.
An American clay target manufacturer claims to have created an eco-friendly target, but it is quite expensive and they also advise that the composition of soils can be abnormally affected by debris.
After years of hard work and trials, Clay Targets Australia, the country’s only clay target manufacturer, is able to release their eco-friendly and degradable clay target, which they claim will not only degrade, but also enrich soils and vegetation. Another positive of their success is that the new target requires much less energy to produce than the traditional targets, furthering the eco-friendly attitude of the company and its product. The modified sulphur target that Clay Targets Australia uses is not classified as hazardous or a dangerous good; in fact, the composition of the target can balance alkaline soils and aid the digestive systems of the ruminants that feed upon the vegetation.
Clay Targets Australia is confident that their modified sulphur targets will be so economical to produce, that imported targets will soon be a thing of the past - and they guarantee to beat any importer’s written price. The target comes with a full environmental accreditation from both The University of Queensland and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Clay Targets Australia has also produced a Material Safety Data Sheet on their product.
