Clay Target Q&A
With Russell Mark, Olympic gold and silver medallist

Q Lately, I have seen clay targets at our local gun club that don’t break completely but have little pieces fly off the side of them that are hardly noticeable. It has caused many arguments and I am unsure what exactly the rule is regarding this. Can you enlighten me? Even if the target does not break completely is this still classed as a hit when only a tiny chip comes of it?

A I know the problem you are talking about. It is relatively new to our sport and I am not sure what the reason for it really is. The rule in trap shooting is that if there is a ‘visible’ piece of the target then it is counted as a hit. It is luck of the draw if you get a referee that has good eyesight and is also paying sufficient attention to look at the targets closely enough. I am sure your club is not isolated in this situation but hopefully some solution can be found soon.
