1st Selection Shoot
Griffith Sporting Clays hosted the first 2012 SSAA NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoot at its Dave Wallace Range on November 26 to 27, 2011. Two 5-Stand layouts had been prepared in the rocky, bush-covered outcrop with many traps hidden in the surrounding bush, which presented the competitors with an excellent variety of targets that closely simulated many field targets. The layouts were set up by local SSAA members Greg Allen and Troy Adams. Some very gusty wind and rain squalls on Saturday afternoon added to the challenge of breaking many of the clay targets and kept overall scores lower than usual. The improved weather on Sunday saw scores rise as well.
The shoot was well attended by 45 competitors from around New South Wales who were keen to do well and gain selection points in the first 100-target State Selection Shoot. Competitors attended from Bathurst, Deniliquin, Hay, Wodonga, Canberra, Ardlethan, Temora, Ariah Park, Echuca, Narrandera and around the Griffith District. The shoot was generously sponsored by ELEY Cartridges and Casella Wines, Griffith.
While there were many excellent scores, the windy conditions precluded any perfect rounds of 25 targets being shot. When the final scores had been posted, Griffith's Doug Osborne tied with Darren Macartney from Hay with an excellent score of 89/100. After a lengthy shoot-off, Darren emerged as the winner of the High Gun. Other placegetters were:
AA Grade: Doug Osborne (Griffith) 89, Shaun Krzus (Griffith) 86, Andrew Webb (Bathurst) 83

2nd State Selection Shoot
The 2nd 5-Stand State Selection Shoot was held at Majura Park Gun Club ACT on 15 January. Local SSAA members Matt Webster, Andy Vaccaro and Joe Thaller had prepared two quite different 5-Stand layouts with their newly acquired traps and equipment that had been provided by a grant from SSAA ACT. The top layout had a good variety of targets thrown well into the sky, providing everyone with plenty of time and opportunity to post a good score. The bottom layout was set up among some trees and presented competitors with a different type of target with a range of low-flying clays, many emerging from surrounding bushland. Together, both layouts tested everyone’s shotgunning skills and provided an excellent day’s 5-Stand shooting in very pleasant Canberra weather.
About 50 competitors attended from Sydney, Griffith, Deniliquin, Forbes, Hay, Temora, Wodonga, Echuca, Dalmeny, Bermagui, Mudgee, Bathurst and all around the ACT. Generous sponsorship was provided by ELEY Cartridges and Falcon Cartridges and Casella Wines at Griffith, with winners receiving generous supplies of ELEY and Falcon ammunition and Yellow Tail wine to return home with. Shoot administration was handled very capably by Rachel in the office, while Jenelle and Melissa served some tasty catering from the kitchen throughout the day.
During the 100-target event, Jayden Roe and Shaun Krzus put together perfect rounds of 25 to win 25 SSAA 5-Stand Break badges. At the end of shooting and after several shoot-offs, the winners were:
Overall High Gun winner: Jayden Roe 93/100 (Deniliquin) after shoot-off with Shaun Kruz (Griffith)
AA Grade: Shaun Krzus (93) Griffith, Darren Macartney (Hay) 92, Greg Allen (Griffith) 85

3rd State Selection Shoot
The SSAA Forbes Branch was the venue for the 3rd SSAA NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoot on 26 March. With the use of one of the SSAA shotgun trailers managed by Andrew Webb, three 5-Stand layouts were set up at the range by Andrew and local members. A large pool of water at the range was again utilised for one of the layouts and the ‘Duck Pond’ proved to be a very popular but challenging layout. The other layouts consisted of more conventional ranges of different but equally challenging targets. As competition began early in the morning, some of the targets were affected by sunlight in the early part of the shoot, making for some quick, snappy shots as the clays emerged from the glare just before landing.
In contrast to last year, the weather this year was excellent, with the scores showing improvement as well. Nearly 40 competitors attended from the Central Coast, Canberra, Dubbo, Wodonga, Mudgee, Bathurst, Young, Parkes, Temora, Hay, Griffith and around the Forbes District.
The shoot was generously sponsored by Mitton Bros Earthmoving, Grenfell, ELEY Cartridges and Casella Wines, and was well organised by local sporting shooters Norm Brook, Doug Davis, Tony Bratton, Phil Picker and Laurie Redfern, who were helped with the catering and in the office by other members.
At the end of the 75-target event, Hay shooter Darren Macartney demonstrated his superior skills on the day with a superb score of 70/75. This was a great result, given the difficult light conditions and the level of competition he was up against. Darren was also the only competitor to shoot a 25 possible. Other winners from the shoot were:
AA Grade: Frank Tagliapietra (Griffith) 62, Grant Barton (Bathurst) 62 (shoot-off), Matt Webster (Canberra) 61
A Grade: Anthony Pitt (Wodonga) 56, Simon Gee (Hay) 54, PeterRea (Temora) 52
B Grade: Andy Vaccaro (Canberra) 54, Gary Howarth (Parkes) 47, Troy Adams (Griffith) 43
C Grade: Angello Cirillo (Griffith) 28, Leon Buys (Central Coast) 27, Paul Kelly (Forbes) 20
Ladies: Amy Buys (Central Coast) 57, Casey Jacka (Hay) 41, Margaret Salvestro (Griffith) 18
Veterans: Laurie Redfern (Forbes) 47, Warren Brown (Griffith) 47, Adrian Hodges (Forbes) 44
Juniors: Jarrad Williams (Mudgee) 53
