NSW State Combined Services Championships

The 2011 SSAA New South Wales Combined Services State Championships were held at the Windamere Regional Shooting Complex in Mudgee from May 27 to May 29. A total of 99 competitors participated in the three days of competition for medals in two classes of Pistol, Standard Rifle, Modified Rifle, two classes of Sniper Rifle and Tactical and Scoped Modified Rifle.
Range preparations were completed on Thursday afternoon in ready for the Pistol matches to be conducted on Friday. This was done by a very small Mudgee team and a volunteer who had travelled from Sydney.
After scrutineering and sign-in, all competitors were welcomed and briefed for a safe and enjoyable competition. Pistol competition began with a late start on Friday due to the fog and very cold winds, but 16 competitors shot in four events across two classes of Pistol. Class 1 was completed before Class 2 took the line.
Once the Pistol matches and lunchtime sausage sandwiches were finished, we got on with the .310 Cadet and .22 Trainer Rifle events. A total of 22 competitors shot the match from 100 to 50m and with light, variable wind and fine conditions, most scores were in keeping with the conditions, but some were extremely good. Medals for both .22 and .310 were presented on Sunday.
After a very cold night of -5C, the temperature improved for Saturday’s shooting. 8.30am saw the opening of scrutineering and sign-in, followed by the briefing for proceedings at 9.30am, where 30 competitors were welcomed for a safe and enjoyable competition. The competition began with the Standard Rifle 300m Deliberate match, which showed who managed to sight-in properly before the shoot. Then the Modified Rifle matches were held, following the same shoot requirements as Standard Rifle, but not being graded.
The SSAA NSW Combined Services 2011 AGM got under way shortly after 4pm and then at 6pm, a spit roast dinner was held. The Mudgee Catering Committee served up really good tucker once again!
On Sunday, it was another Rifle day. Matches were shot on mini core targets at 300m with very little crosswinds and 16 shooters lining up for the competition. During the day, those who lent out rifles and ammo to other competitors were largely beaten by those they lent their equipment to - Murphy’s Law at its best!
The medals for the three days of competition were presented and the raffles drawn.
Many thanks must go to the Mudgee members who once again hosted another great shoot and all the volunteers who helped over the days of the State Championships. Big thanks to the competitors from across New South Wales, who attended and made it all worthwhile. Thank you to Lawrance Ordnance for sponsoring the patches and Don Mackay, proprietor of Rylstone Guns & Ammo, for supplying many of the prizes raffled and the gun safe and hard gun case bag, which went to deserving competitors. Thank you also to Tom and Jan Wensrich for all the food and a superb dinner on the Saturday night.
The Combined Services discipline’s next main event will be the 2011 National Championships, which will be hosted by the SSAA Para Branch at the SSAA SA Range at Monarto in South Australia from October 14 to 16 2011. The next big NSW Combined Services event will be the City vs Country 2012 at the Windamere Regional Shooting Complex on the third weekend in March next year, so start your practising now!
