1st Selection Shoot
More than 50 competitors attended the first New South Wales 5-Stand State Selection Shoot, which was held at Majura Park Gun Club in the ACT on February 20 in fine, sunny weather. Competitors arrived from Sydney, Newcastle, Griffith, Hay, the South Coast, Temora, Yass, Woolongong, Moama, Queenbeyan and all around the ACT to participate in the 100-target event.

Using the SSAA Shotgun Trailer, Greg Allen and Frank Tagliapietra set up two different 5-Stand layouts that had a good variety of targets and offered plenty of challenge to everyone, particularly to those who were trying 5-Stand shooting for the first time. One was in front of a trench layout with the targets high in front of the stands, while the other was set up in bushland with many of the targets coming from behind trees to add realism to these simulated field targets.

Joe and Nadine kept the shoot running smoothly in the office, while the kitchen helpers provided some tasty refreshments. The shoot was generously sponsored by Superbarn Supermarkets, Casella Wines and ELEY Cartridges. The results of the shoot were:

2nd Selection Shoot
More than 40 competitors attended the NSW 5-Stand Second State Selection Shoot at Hay on March 20 this year, despite it being the opening of the duck season in Victoria. Competitors arrived from around New South Wales and the ACT including Sydney, Bathurst, Canberra, Temora, Griffith, Deniliquin, Moama, Barham, Wagga Wagga and from around the Hay district. With the weather variable and unpredictable, the shoot was held in mostly fine weather, but with widely varying light conditions and this caused problems with some shooters who had difficulty picking up some of the targets in the overcast conditions.

Two 5-Stand layouts had been set up using the SSAA Shotgun Trailer and there was a wonderful variety of targets presented to challenge everyone’s shooting skills throughout the 100-target event.

SSAA Hay Branch provided an excellent venue for the shoot with some great facilities and a friendly welcome to everyone. Jan and Michelle kept the shoot running smoothly in the office, while the kitchen helpers provided some tasty refreshments that were cooked by Tony and Roy. The shoot was generously sponsored by Casella Wines and ELEY Cartridges.

At the conclusion of the shoot, Griffith competitor Bart Brighenti emerged the winner with a superb score of 94/100, which was quite ahead of anyone else’s score. Bart also finished off by shooting two 25s in the final two rounds. Other winners were:

3rd Selection Shoot
The SSAA Forbes Branch was the venue for the 3rd NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoot on 9 April. Two 5-Stand layouts were set up at the range by local members. A large pool of water at the range was again utilised for one of the layouts and the Duck Pond proved to be a very popular but challenging layout, with many competitors experiencing shooting clays over water for the first time. A clay target that skipped across the surface of the water proved to be many a competitor’s undoing. The other layout consisted of a conventional range of different but equally challenging targets that included a very fast hopping rabbit.

With the weather very bleak, overcast and wet on Sunday morning, competitors faced not only the challenge of hitting the targets, but also seeing some. And everyone worked hard throughout the 100-target event in the poor conditions as they attempted to build a respectable score. Nearly 40 competitors attended from Sydney, Wollongong, Dubbo, Mudgee, Bathurst, Young, Parkes, Temora, Wyalong, Moama, Hay, Deniliquin, Griffith and around the Forbes District.

The shoot was generously sponsored by Walkers AGnVET Services, Forbes, ELEY Cartridges and Casella Wines, and was well organised by local sporting shooters Norm Brook, Doug Davis, Tony Bratton, Phil Picker and Laurie Redfern, who were helped by other members with the catering and in the office.

At the end of the 100-target event, Jayden Roe, a junior shooter from Deniliquin, demonstrated his skill, quick reflexes and sharp vision by winning outright with an excellent score of 75/100. This was a superb result given the difficult conditions and the level of competition he was up against. Other winners from the shoot were:

AA Grade: Bart Brighenti (Griffith) 72, Shaun Krzus (Griffith) 72 (shoot-off), Greg Allen (Griffith) 71

A Grade: Darren Macartney (Hay) 74, Mick Munro (Wyalong) 74 (shoot-off), Frank DiFiore (Griffith) 65

4th Selection Shoot
With Griffith Sporting Clays situated at the top of rocky, bush-covered hill, there was plenty of opportunity to present competitors at this New South Wales 5-Stand State Selection Shoot with some interesting and exciting simulated field targets. Two 5-Stand layouts were set out by SSAA Griffith members who had clay targets springing out of the bush and from high towers, which kept all competitors focused on the many challenges presented to them.

To assist long-distance travellers, two rounds were held on Saturday afternoon, with the final two rounds on Sunday morning. Host club members led by Troy Adams roasted a sumptuous feast, which everyone enjoyed on Saturday night, washed down with Yellow Tail wine.
The shoot was well attended by more than 40 competitors from around New South Wales, who were keen to secure some points in the 100-target State Selection Shoot. Competitors attended from Sydney, Canberra, Forbes, Bathurst, Deniliquin, Hay, Ardlethan, Temora, Cobar, Moama and around the Griffith District.

Young Jayden Roe, a junior from Deniliquin, continued his winning ways with some brilliant shooting, being just one target shy of tying for High Gun.

Local Griffith shooter, Frank Tagliapietra demonstrated that he could handle the targets on the hilltop by outpacing the opposition to win the High Gun with a superb score of 89/100. Frank was also the only competitor to score a perfect round of 25. Other place-getters were:

AA Grade: Shaun Krzus (Griffith) 83, Anthony Mancini (Griffith) 78, Darren Macartney (Hay) 77

5th Selection Shoot
The final State Selection Shoot was held at Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club to utilise the two 5-Stand layouts in operation there. This club has some excellent facilities and presents many 5-Stand targets that are different from other venues, as the layouts can make use of traps in trench layouts or a variety of portable ones placed strategically around competitors. The day’s competition consisted of 100 targets over the two layouts. While the targets appeared to be relatively straightforward, competitors had to concentrate and work hard to post a respectable score.

A smaller number of competitors than usual ventured out in the fine winter weather conditions to participate, with many travelling long distances to take the final opportunity to gain some selection points towards the New South Wales Shotgun Team. Competitors travelled from Hay, Griffith, Forbes, Bathurst, Canberra, Wollongong and around the Sydney, Newcastle and Central Coast areas.

The shoot was generously sponsored by Casella Wines with plenty of Yellow Tail wine and ELEY Cartridges.

During the shoot, five competitors managed to shoot six perfect rounds of 25 targets. Two were shot by Frank Searles, while Greg Allen, Jon Lloyd and Reno Morganti shot one each. Sam Sweeney also put in a super effort in the AA Grade shoot-off to score another one.

At the conclusion of the competition, local shooter Frank Searles claimed the High Gun with a superb score of 93/100. He was very closely followed by a three-way shoot-off with three competitors in AA Grade on 92/100. Other winners were:

AA Grade: Sam Sweeney (Cessnock), Greg Allen (Griffith), Michael Ling (Newcastle) (shoot-off) 92
