2010 National Combined Services Championships
15-17 October 2010
SSAA Victoria Military Rifle Club at Eagle Park Range in Little River, Victoria
After heavy rains on the Tuesday and the early arrival of interstate competitors on Wednesday, Thursday’s practice session was conducted in windy but dry conditions. Unfortunately, the start of Friday’s Pistol competition was endured in wet, windy and cold conditions, so after scrutineering and the usual briefing, formalities were out of the way. By the time the first detail had completed their first programmed practices, with little shelter, the wind and rain had returned to such an extent that the sodden targets were blown from the frames. Conditions did not improve after an hour’s postponement and it was decided by the delegates to adopt a wait-and-see attitude with the weather the way it was.
It was then decided to conduct the Discipline Subcommittee Meeting in the interim in the warmth of the clubhouse. After the meeting concluded, slight modifications to the target backers were made, which would enable the target to handle the wet and windy conditions. This proved successful and the weather improved to such an extent that the 3-P Core matches for both Class 1 and Class 2 were completed. It was decided not to abandon the other events and if time and weather permitted, they would be conducted during the course of the weekend.
Saturday saw a marginal improvement in the weather and after scrutineering and briefing, competition got underway in the Rifle events and the firing line cover was certainly appreciated.
Saturday night’s three-course dinner was excellent, with more than 60 catered for.
Sunday morning arrived with another marginal improvement in conditions. It was decided to try to conduct the remaining Pistol events once the remaining Rifle events for the day were completed. The .310 Cadet and .22 Trainer events were conducted at the same time as the Long Range Rifle events and at 11am, the Pistol events also started. All planned events, with the exception of the 200m Snap, were finished by the projected time.
Presentations started with the National Postal Medals, then the National Competition medals and trophies. The SSAA Swag, kindly donated by SSAA National, went to Eric MacBain from Townsville.
All in all, a great effort was put in by the organising committee to achieve what was done with significant time loss and the conditions on the first day. Thanks also go to all the competitors who came from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and Western Australia for the way they conducted themselves in some of the worst weather conditions at a National Championships that I have been involved in. This proved beyond doubt in my mind that Combined Services shooters are the most hardy and adaptive of all SSAA competitive shooters. Well done all!
