Over the weekend of October 9 and 10, 2010, when the school holidays suited some states but not others, all states and branches were invited to send juniors to the annual National Junior Challenge, this year held in Melbourne. Tasmania sent their first and very large contingent of kids to take part in the clinics and competitions. The special weekend is designed to encourage new and experienced junior shooters to get together, learn new skills and compete alongside other young shooters.

Ten boys flew over the ocean to join in the fun, and fun and success they had in spades. Seven boys came from the Little River Branch; one brave soul from ACT, who had to use a Springvale Youth Training Club gun as his didn’t arrive; and three girls and four boys from Springvale. Believe it or not, we had two days of sun, great coaches and parents abound who acted as range staff and scorers. Bruno’s Cafe was open both days from breakfast time and there was a free dinner and raffle on the Saturday night. What a weekend! Where were the rest of you?

As the results below show, there was success galore. Congratulations to the place-getters in this competition, who got to take home glittering national medals as proof of their success over the weekend. There were six Junior Awards in Field Rifle and five in 3-Positional. Luckily, there were no draws in the scores, but the 2-Gun Aggregate had only 0.1 points between them and we were delighted to see the second place shooter, Joshua Taylor from Little River, shake hands with the winner, Corey Jarvis from Tasmania, sincerely congratulating him for his win.

What a wonderful future the shooting sports have. The sportsmanship shown at this event was beyond reproach, proving again to coaches and families all over the country that there is a very strong, confident and enthusiastic group of young SSAA members making ready to take our places. Keep your eye on the competition pages each month to see when and where the next one will be held. Your branch president will get notice, so keep asking for information. This and other junior events are great opportunities to shoot, whatever your abilities, with your peers and for you to meet new friends from all over the country.
