1st Selection Shoot
The Cecil Park CTC at the Sydney International Shooting Centre proved to be an excellent venue to begin the 5-Stand competition this year. Shooting in fine, but very hot and humid conditions, 40 competitors from Mudgee, Bathurst, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Hay, Griffith, Forbes and the Sydney area attended.

Two excellent 5-Stand layouts had been prepared by Grant Powell, Jon Lloyd, Robert Gray and other Sydney branch members. The layouts provided an excellent variety of challenging targets that tested the skills of all. With many good scores in the 100 target event, Newcastle shooter Michael Ling, was the only one to shoot a perfect round of 25 targets.

The shoot was generously sponsored by EXPRESS Cartridges and SSAA (NSW).

Sydney shooter Grant Powell and Michael Ling both top scored with 87/100 with Grant emerging with the High Gun after a shoot-off with Michael. Other winners were:

2nd Selection Shoot
Competitors at the SSAA Hay Branch shoot might have been forgiven for thinking John Oxley's mythical "Inland Sea" was real when the skies opened and dumped plenty of drought breaking rain on the Hay Plain over the shoot weekend. The 37 competitors from Bathurst, the Central Coast, Sydney, Lake Cargelligo, Griffith, Barham and the Hay District coped well with the changing weather conditions that ranged from fine and sunny to thunderstorms, blinding rain and strong winds. At times the clays were not only wind affected but also rain affected. Not withstanding, everyone enjoyed the shoot and the 'western hospitality' provided by the local Hay members.

Two excellent 5-Stand layouts had been prepared by Greg Allen (SSAA Shotgun Trailer Manager), Frank Tagliapetra and Hay Branch members. The layouts provided an excellent variety of challenging targets and simulated many bush targets as the traps were set amongst many Box and Wilga trees. Many scores in the 100 target event reflected the variable weather conditions throughout the day but Griffith shooter, Frank Tagliapetra was still able to record a perfect round of 25 targets.

The shoot was generously sponsored by EXPRESS Cartridges and SSAA (NSW).

Local SSAA Hay President, Darren Macartney handled the conditions well and won High Gun with an excellent score of  84/100. Other winners were:

AA Grade: Bart Brighenti (Griffith) 81, Grant Powell (Sydney) 74

A Grade: Frank Tagliapetra (Griffith) 82, Andrew Webb (Wallerawang) 75, Stephen Penglase (Barham) 75

3rd Selection Shoot
On April 11 this year, SSAA Forbes Branch hosted the 3rd NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoot. Fifty competitors attended from Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Dubbo, Narromine, Mudgee, Bathurst, Young, Parkes, Wyalong, Hay, Griffith and around the Forbes District.

Two 5-Stand layouts were set up at the range with the SSAA NSW Shotgun Trailer providing the second one. With a large pool of water at the range following recent rain, trailer manager Greg Allen, with the help of Frank Tagliapetra, positioned the traps around the edge of the water to simulate a variety of field targets, particularly ducks over water. The ‘Duck Pond’ proved to be a very popular layout, with many competitors experiencing shooting clays over water for the first time. The other layout consisted of a range of different but equally challenging targets set by members of SSAA Forbes.

With both layouts on open ground and susceptible to any wind variations, the practice on Saturday afternoon was very popular, with competitors attempting to work out the best way to hit the targets in the open, windy conditions, before the competition began the next day. With the targets changed for Sunday morning, competition proved very challenging for many competitors and the blustery conditions kept everyone focused as they attempted to build a good score.

The shoot was generously sponsored by the SSAA and EXPRESS Cartridges, with the shoot well organised by local SSAA members Norm Brook, Doug Davis, Tony Bratton and Laurie Redfern, who were helped by other members with the catering and in the office over the weekend.

At the end of the 100-target event, Sydney shooter Grant Powell demonstrated his skill with wind-affected targets by winning outright with an excellent score of 87/100. Other winners were:

A Grade: Michael Ling (Newcastle ) 82, Barty Brighenti (Griffith) 81, Laurie Redfern (Forbes) 78

B Grade: Jon Lloyd (Sydney) 77, Peter Jacka (Hay) 65, Robert Broscas (Sydney) 64

4th Selection Shoot
The 4th NSW 5-Stand State Selection Shoot was held at Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club on 23 May. The club provided three excellent 5-Stand layouts, which were computer controlled and enabled targets to be presented according to SSAA 5-Stand rules.

As always, an excellent variety of challenging targets were prepared by local members Kevin Raymond, Frank Searles and Graham Hayes using Trench, Down The Line (DTL), Skeet and mobile traps. The incoming quartering rabbit target proved to be deceptively difficult, with the rabbit escaping untouched from most competitors.

Shooting conditions were excellent, with the weather fine and clear. Nine squads of shooters attended from around Sydney, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Griffith, Forbes, Bathurst, Mudgee, Bowral and the surrounding Newcastle and Hunter region. John Norris, Andrew Webb and Jon Lloyd skillfully put together perfect rounds of 25 targets during the 75-target event.

The Overall High Gun went to Sydney shooter Jon Lloyd, with an excellent score of 69/75. Other winners were:

AA Grade: Sam Sweeney (Cessnock) 68, Duncan Robinson (Sydney) 66, Kevin Raymond (Newcastle) 63

A Grade: Greg Allen (Griffith) 68, Grant Powell (Sydney) 67, Andrew Webb (Bathurst) 66, after a shoot-off with Frank Tagliapietra (Griffith) and Dean Delaney (Newcastle)

5th Selection Shoot
The rocky, bush-covered outcrop at Griffith Field and Game Club proved to be an ideal site to establish two 5-Stand layouts for the final New South Wales State Selection Shoot on 30 May. Many traps were hidden in the surrounding bush or mounted on nearby towers and presented competitors with an excellent variety of targets that closely simulated many field targets. The layouts were set up by SSAA members Greg Allen and Frank Tagliapietra. While the weekend saw some welcome rain, it also brought low clouds and mist to much of the shoot, which added to the challenge of breaking many targets.

The shoot was well attended by 53 competitors from around New South Wales and Victoria, who were keen to do well in the 100-target Final State Selection Shoot. Competitors attended from Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Mudgee, Forbes, Bathurst, Deniliquin, Hay, Lake Cargelligo, Wodonga, Mulwala, Yarrawonga, Ardlethan, West Wyalong, Leeton, Bermagui and around the Griffith District.

While there were many excellent scores, particularly from local shooters, it was left to the visitors, Newcastle shooter Michael Ling and veteran David Brenton from Wollongong, who were the only ones to score a perfect round of 25.

The Overall High Gun was won by Marty Seymour (Yarrawonga) with a very credible score of 94/100. Other place-getters were:

AA Grade: Doug Osborne (Griffith) 93, Bart Brighenti (Griffith) 92, Grant Powell (Sydney) 88

A Grade: Frank Tagliapetria (Griffith) 91, Darren Macartney (Hay) 90, Andrew Webb (Bathurst) 90 (countback)

The shoot was generously sponsored by SSAA NSW, Casella Wines with Yellow Tail Wines and Milperra Marketing with EXPRESS Cartridges. Therese and Torren Allen provided some very tasty and welcome catering throughout the day, while Michelle helped to keep the shoot administration running smoothly.
