WGAA (SSAA) WA Branch Inc Pointer & Setter (Closed Season) Field Trial
23 May - 1 June 2009

L-R: Alan Willey, Abbey and judge Barry Oliver.
The annual four-day WGAA WA (Closed Season) Pointer & Setter Field Trials open to all pointing breeds was held at South Meckering in Western Australia from May 23 to June 1. Again, we had very good support from interstate competitors and judges participating. We had nine entries with dogs coming from Western Australia, Victoria, and South Australia including Kangaroo Island. The dogs included three pointers, three Irish setters, two Brittanys and an English setter.

Friday was the Bob Dean Memorial Trophy Trial. The judge was Barry Oliver and the assistant judge was Dave Dunn. It was held in a good stubble paddock with regrowth and a good cool breeze blowing. There was plenty of game and the people there witnessed some very good dog work. After two rounds, two pointers and an Irish setter completed their cards and went to the retrieve/seek-dead. The two pointers completed their retrieves successfully. Friday’s results were:

First: WGAA FCh (CS) Ywurrie Rani, Western Australia (Abbey) Pointer, handled by Alan Willey.

Second: WGAA NFCh (CS) Koram Kris at Innistona (Imp Ire) Victoria (Major) Pointer, handled by Henry Foster.

Saturday was the Jack Pontin Memorial Trophy. The judge was Henry Foster and the assistant judge was Bill Cross. The day was a repeat of Friday with some very good dog work, but Abbey was the only dog to fill her card and go to the retrieves, which were successfully done.

First: WGAA FCh (CS) Ywurrie Rani, WA (Abbey) Pointer, handled by Alan Willey.

Sunday was the SSAA WA State Championships. The judge was Dave Dunn and the assistant judge was Kathy Oliver (Victoria). Unfortunately, scenting conditions changed dramatically and only three finds were recorded and the judges called a ‘no-result’.

Monday was the Inaugural Grouse Plate. The judge was Denis Everard and the assistant judge was Alan Willey. Unfortunately, it was a repeat of the previous day and a ‘no-result’ was announced.

Despite Sunday and Monday’s results, everyone enjoyed the four-day format and requested it again for next year.

The club would like to thank our major sponsor of the weekend, Rosendorff Diamond Jewellers. Any SSAA member showing their membership card at any of their stores will receive special treatment.
