The 2008 NSW State Muzzleloading Championship was held at the Taree-Wingham Branch Rifle Range in September. The shoot was professionally run by Jim Cross, his wife Karen and Branch President and our scorer for the weekend, Dennis Ruprecht. They were helped by a dedicated group of workers. The weather was fine, being unusually hot on the Saturday and much cooler on the Sunday. The facilities that were provided by this branch were excellent. While numbers were down on previous years - I am sure because of the cost of fuel - it was a great weekend.

Michael Peterson created a new record for the 50m Offhand Traditional Rifle with a score of 98.4, beating the previous score of 96. This is excellent shooting and is going to be difficult to beat. Michael also won the Class 2 Traditional Rifle Aggregate Trophy for the third time in a row, beating Bob Doran, who not only donated this trophy, but strived hard to win it from him.

A new trophy donated by Toni and Roger Awcock for Class 1 Military Rifle was won by Bob Doran, with myself as runner up. We thank them for their generous donation.

Some of the scores were very close. In the 100m Class 3 Benchrest, the difference between first and second place was 0.1. In the 200m Class 3 Benchrest, the result between first, second and third was just one point, with the last two places tied and decided on a countback. The Aggregate for Class 3 was decided by 0.1 between Bob Doran and Laurie Cook after shooting three events - not bad shooting for muzzleloaders!

Some new shooters also won medals for the first time. Shayne Barnsley, a junior at last year’s Championship, won his first senior medal. Robyn Perkins and Patricia Hanlon won two, with Herb Buckland getting his first. You have to be in it to win it! It is good to see new shooters among the medals.

Toni Awcock, who won a bronze medal at the International Muzzle Loading Championship, as part of Australian female team in Adelaide in August, was unfortunately at this shoot. Congratulations to her for her efforts in Adelaide though.

The overall Champion for this year is Bob Doran - a top shot and always difficult to beat.

All the shooters had a good time and we look forward to seeing them next year. I congratulate Taree-Wingham Branch for another excellent Championship and all shooters on their success and participation.
