Liberal Party of Australia election statement

The Coalition recognises that a long-term strategy is needed on firearms access and use. A Coalition Government would be committed to maintaining a range of measures to control firearms and their criminal misuse, while also preserving the interests of sporting shooters.

The Coalition recognises that firearms education is an important element in any long term strategy. A Coalition Government would commit $100,000 annually over three years to support the work of the Firearms Safety Foundation (Victoria) to increase the Foundation’s provision of firearms education and training to community groups, local government and shooting organisations on hunting and firearm safety.

The previous Coalition Government established the Firearms Advisory Committee, which worked hard to achieve consensus on firearms laws. If elected, a Coalition Government would to retain the current Firearms Advisory Council.

Current firearms laws in Australia are based predominantly on the resolutions agreed upon by Australian police ministers and compiled in the National Firearms Agreement. We believe this is a carefully considered agreement that has improved firearms laws in Australia to benefit and protect the community. There is no single measure or package of reforms that can prevent firearm crime or improve safety overnight.

We fully support the legitimate use of firearms by sporting shooters and will ensure the needs and interests of sporting shooters have been well considered in the development of future firearms reforms.

More generally, the Coalition believes Labor has made the future of all Australians more uncertain. On top of their billion-dollar waste on school buildings, their mismanaged home insulation fiasco and their soft border protection policies, Labor is growing Australia’s debt by $100 million per day. They even removed an elected Prime Minister to suit their own political interest.

The Coalition is taking a stand in the best interest of Australia’s future. We will end the waste, repay the debt, stop the taxes, stop the boats and ease the pressure on Australian families.

Throughout the election campaign, we will be progressively announcing policies outlining our commitments for Australia’s future. These policies will cover a number of issues canvassed in your survey. Once announced, our policies will be available at www.liberal.org.au and www.nationals.org.au
