Australian Fishing and Lifestyle Party election statement

The 2010 Federal Election will be a watershed for those of us who enjoy outdoor pursuits, whether they are fishing, camping, four-wheel driving, hunting or shooting.

The Governments that we elect, with our best intentions, soon seem to compromise their intended positions when faced with the political requirements of office. The political powerbrokers now see our access and civil rights as little more than a tradable political commodity as they negotiate them away for political advantage.

The Greens, in concert with Australian and internationally based environmental groups, now effectively dictate environmental policy to the Government; a situation that will not change as long as governments rely on third party support for their survival. International influence on decisions being made on the Coral Sea, World Heritage listing of Cape York and Wild Rivers now poses the question as to who authorised the Australian Government to abrogate its responsibilities for environmental management of this country to overseas organisations. The acknowledged fact that many, if not most, of these areas are still in pristine condition more than 200 years after the First Fleet arrived confirms that as Australians, we can look after our own country without international organisations meddling in our affairs.

There is little time left to ensure that our voice is heard loud and clear by the politicians that the responsible use of the environment is the right of all Australians. To negotiate with politicians, you must have a commodity that is of value to them and that is your vote.

Just like any tradable commodity, the more you have, the more influential you become and this is where the Australian Fishing and Lifestyle Party (AFLP) comes in. To gain a voice at the negotiating table, the AFLP will run two candidates for the Senate in Queensland at this election. Our primary purpose is to have a Senator elected, providing us with a voice that will be heard where the decisions are made.

The AFLP’s environment policy principles acknowledge that as humans, we are part of the environment and have our place in the environmental process.

Environment policy details:

  • Humans are part of life on earth.
  • It is appropriate for humans to interact in all earth’s ecosystems.
  • Human environmental interaction should be responsible based on the principles of ecosystem conservation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable harvest and scientific monitoring of human interaction.
  • Education is preferable to ‘lock out’. Facts and science, not emotion and politics, should guide human interactions.
  • All ecosystems continually change, with a process of degeneration and regeneration occurring through time.

Our support for the safe, sustainable and responsible use of the environment for legitimate pursuits is at the core of our principles. We urge you to support us at the upcoming election; this issue is now about your civil rights as Australians to responsibly enjoy what this great country has to offer.
